Grace Clare came into the world at the end of this January, and we celebrated a few weeks later with a little lifestyle photo session in her family’s home in Nashville. Surrounded by her wonderful parents, big brother, and golden doodle, she slept and smiled her way through the sweetest little newborn session. Here are a few of my favorites from Grace’s first Valentine’s Day.

If you’ve perused through any of my recent blog posts, you’ll know that I’ve been shooting a lot of in-home lifestyle sessions this winter. From families to couples to newborns, they have all been so much fun and have been so sweet.

Newborn photography takes on all different forms, and I have landed in a lifestyle approach. Much like my photojournalistic approach to wedding photography, I want each of my photo sessions to tell a story. I want every photo to capture emotion, whether it be the classic photo of a family on the couch smiling, or an in-between moment of mom consoling a crying child. (Or the funnier moments of the dog leaping onto the bed to see what’s going on.)

This newborn photo session tells the story of Grace, who was born into a kind and loving family in Nashville, with a big brother who kisses her head and give her a fist bump, and a big furry dog who seems to want to be in the middle of everything. The photos of her nursery hold the images and decorations that she will grow up looking at and learning from; the chair that she will spend so much time being held in; the window that will maybe capture her attention one day as she gets older. This is what photography is all about to me.
